Welcome to your anahata chakra, the energetic center that is vitally important to your physical, mental, and spiritual wellbeing. But why is it so important?
Well, let me explain by asking you a few questions.
Do you ever feel….
- Tense in your chest, like an elephant is perched there?
- Like you can’t take a full breath, because something is blocking your airways?
- Like your heart is heavy, because you can’t heal from a painful experience?
- Like you can’t surrender and soften, because there’s one more thing to check off the list?
- Like you can’t give and receive true love, as if there’s a wall built around your heart?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, welcome to the club.
I’ve answered and still answer yes to many of these questions. It’s common for each of us to experience these blockages, misalignments, or constrictions from within based on daily experiences.
Take a moment to sit back and reflect on your life.
How many times has your heart hurt? Whether it was caused by devastating trauma, the ending of a relationship, an argument where hurtful words were hurled, or a situation where you withheld your truth.
How many times? Too many too count, right?
When we experience this type of pain it accumulates in our heart chakra space and either two things happen. We either discharge the painful sensation/feelings through techniques that support our wellbeing (like yoga, meditation, relaxation), or we hold the pain inside, creating an armor around our heart.
Many of us choose the latter because it’s familiar, accepted by society (don’t be too emotional, don’t cry), and appears easier at the time. But the reality is, it takes work to bind this painful energy and hold it inside. Just imagine the amount of times you’ve held back tears, how did you hold them back?
You held them back by constricting from within. Over time, this constriction can lead to a heap of trouble, like chest pains, heart centered illnesses, the inability to stay in a romantic relationship, a fear of giving and receiving love…. just to name a few.
Life is hard, I’m right there with you and I know you’re doing the best you can (and so am I).
But, life also offers us tools to support us through these hardships and I’m a firm believer that the yoga practice and studies are one of these tools. So today, together, we will venture into our anahata chakra through the yoga practice.
Our goal is to take off the armor, knock down the walls we’ve built around our heart, and soften, soften, soften.
….. is there such a thing as too much softening, for someone like me (type A and rigid AF), there’s no such thing.
To create this softening, we will move through specific yoga postures, intention setting, and breath work, each targeting the heart chakra space. These movements will support your journey inward, giving you the opportunity to release tension, clear blockages, and bring this energetic center back into alignment.
But before we get started, I need to remind you how important your breath is.
The heart chakra element is air, so naturally, your breath is of great importance when we work with this energetic center. Throughout the class, I will bring you back to your breath, but you can do this too. If you notice too much rigidity, take a deep breath and find where you can soften.
Welcome the experience to surrender and soften, while maintaining the integrity of your shape.
It’s tricky work, trust me, but where your focus goes, your energy flows. So focus on your beautiful beating heart, invite expansive breaths to awaken you from within, massaging away your past pains, and making room for you to fully love again.
Remember, love is your natural state of being and you have the power to experience it fully and wholeheartedly….. all you need is a gentle nudge in the right direction.
Ready to begin? I’ll meet you on your mat and together, we’ll soften into our heart and welcome love through the heart chakra.
See you there, xoxo.
