No joke, we almost sank our boat.
After three months of boat projects and spending more money than we ever could’ve imagined (like over $30,000)….
We were ready to sail onward and trade Antigua for a new island!
Guadeloupe is the first island south of Antigua, it’s owned by the French, and it’s a bigggg island with a giant coastline.
The sail over was an absolute dream! The conditions were perfect; ideal wind speed and direction, manageable seas, bright and sunny skies. And your girl hand-steered almost the entire thing as this was the pre-autopilot days.
While there, we visited three anchorages.
The first reminded us of a scene from a Western movie, except everyone spoke French and there was the most amazing bakery. Baguette, yes please. The second anchorage had zero protection causing the boat to incessantly roll, which means there’s no such as a good night’s sleep. But, there was a beautiful snorkeling spot that entertained us!
Our third anchorage is where the sinking incident happened.
As we were dropping the anchor, I peered down into the boat and noticed the floor boards floating, and I couldn’t grasp what the fuck was happening. But then it all clicked, which is when I began to scream…..
WE ARE SINKING!
Thank the heavens it was daytime, thank the heavens we weren’t offshore, and thank the heavens we were next to a marina. We headed towards the marina, squeezing into the tiniest boat slip after dozens of attempts and running over a mooring ball, but we made it.
Now to find THE LEAK!
While the boys were going hole by hole, the girls were manually pumping, attempting to get the water out of the boat. We found the leak after eliminating every hole, which left the engine as the culprit. Essentially, we had motored for daysss as we traveled the coastline of Guadeloupe because there was no wind, but in that process, our shaft pack was leaking.
Don’t worry about what a shaft pack is, all you need to know is there’s a hole in the boat for it.
So back to the sinking episode, we found the leak, we cleaned up the boat, and then we slammed many, many, many beers, celebrating that all of us (including Alfie) were safe!
Now to the best part, we don’t have any of this recorded for you!
At that time, we were in full CRISIS MODE, panicking, freaking out, and no one thought to grab a camera. So what’s in this episode then? Well, it’s our sail to Guadeloupe, us exploring the island, and our time at Les Saintes (the next set of islands to the south). Buttt because the sinking experience is missing, I had to give you a proper explanation of what happened.
And cross our fingers, it never ever happens again! Ever!
With that said, welcome to episode 5 of our sailing around the world journey.
All our love,
Allie & Myers
