So you want to start practicing yoga BUT have no clue where to start.

 

And the idea of stepping into a yoga studio seems absolutely ridiculous and trying weird postures by your lonesome is even more ridiculous.

 

Well, I feel you.

 

How to start practicing yoga

Yoga, from the outside, can appear intimidating and even a bit superficial at times.

 

BUT please believe me on this one, it’s completely the opposite. Yoga and everything it’s composed of has one ultimate goal:

 

To free us from suffering.

 

Free us from suffering?

 

You might be thinking, I don’t suffer from anything so then yoga is pointless. Rethink that notion: everyone is suffering from something. Whether its lack of sleep, lack of motivation, a difficult relationship, or body image issues. We all have fears and “things” that hold us back in this world. And that’s normal!

 

Yoga is here to make the world a little bit easier.

 

To make our bodies feel a little bit lighter.

 

To make our reactions a little bit softer.

 

And to make this lifetime the best it can possibly be.

 

Now that I’ve serenaded you to practice yoga and want to start like yesterday, how do you actually start?

 

Keep on reading future yogis – below are 5 ways to start bending, breathing, and moving that beautiful body of yours.

 

1. Find a local yoga studio

 

This is #1 on the list because it’s always recommended to practice with a yoga teacher present.

 

The ability to have someone explain, break down, and adjust the postures is so incredibly helpful. Also, the energy and environment of a yoga studio is incomparable. Practicing next to complete strangers who are all there to better themselves, let go, and live a little easier – this is the magic of yoga friends.

 

Do a Google search of studios in your local neighborhood and check out the new student pricing/ deals.

 

I have to admit – yoga came into my life by means of a Groupon deal. It was $30 for 30 days. Fast forward three years, I’m still an avid yogi dedicated to learning more about the practice and myself. Oh and I became a yoga teacher too, that’s how strong this practice is.

 

Don’t become discouraged if a studio doesn’t vibe with you. Upon moving to St. Pete, FL and leaving my first yoga studio ever (slightly traumatic), I visited 6 different places.

 

Let me repeat that: 6 different yoga studios.

 

And alas, the 6th studio is now my home. It’s a place that’s relatable, the teachers are incredible, the energy is through the roof, and it’s just it for me. Find that “it” studio for yourself. Take the time to research and explore.

 

It will be well worth the effort.

 

2. Sign up for an online program

 

If making it to a yoga studio is just not happening for ya, it’s all good. The next best thing is an online yoga program. I highly recommend and love – YogaGlo.

 

Here’s the low down on this program:

  • They offer a free 2 week trial period. It does require a credit card  but it can be canceled before the 2 weeks expire.
  • It’s $18 a month. Yoga studios are generally $50 – $150 a month for unlimited classes. This is a steal!
  • The library of classes is amazing! It’s filled with every type of yoga  genre you could ask for.
  • The class lengths range from 15 – 90 minutes. You choose based on your schedule. It’s so convenient!
  • The class levels range from 1 – 3. And 3 is damn hard, be wary!
  • The classes are taught by world renowned yoga teachers who really, truly know their stuff! It’s always a learning experience.
  • Members can save, favorite, and create a personalized yoga dashboard for ease of use.

 

Types of classes:

  • Vinyasa/power flow type classes
  • Hatha/Iyengar style classes
  • Ashtanga style classes
  • Restorative, yin, and gentle classes
  • Meditations, chanting, and yoga nidra classes
  • Lectures
  • Tutorials/ breakdowns on specific postures

 

Okay, I’ll stop already. That’s a load of information and a lot of typing. But as you can see, I really love this program. It’s not only inexpensive and convenient, but high quality stuff.

 

3. Research donation classes

 

Donation based classes and studios are popping up all over the place.

 

It only takes a little bit of digging to find these gems! The best part about donation classes is you pay what you can. Yoga or any fitness related membership can become quite expensive so this is a great opportunity to save money and still practice.

 

So how do you find these gems?

  • If you have local Lululemon store – this is a great place to start. A lot of Lulu stores will host weekend yoga classes in the actual store, cool right? They push all the merchandise out of the way and voila, a yoga studio has appeared.
  • Check local yoga studio schedules for donation classes. Studios tend to add donation classes if they’re testing the waters with a new idea or teacher.
  • Look for yoga groups that purely run off donations. In St. Pete, we have an acro yoga group that meets 3 times a week, different locations, and all of it’s based off of donations.
  • Check Facebook for these donation based groups, it’s typically where they post information and announcements.

 

4. Buy a DVD

 

A DVD is great for people who maybe aren’t too sure about an online program and like consistency. For example, my mom loves her yoga videos and doing them in the comfort of her living room. The idea of utilizing an online program is foreign and seems too complicated to even attempt. So a DVD it is.

 5. Utilize online resources

 

Last but not least, utilize the vast world of online resources. Almost every magazine, famous yoga teacher, or yoga brand has an online prescience, making it very easy to access great content.

That’s a whole lotta information so do something good with it!

 

Enjoy the beginning process, you only get to discover something once. Savor the moments of being in awkward positions, not understanding the Sanskrit names, and feeling silly.
