I always reflect on how unceremonious my first yoga experience was….. sweating my ass off in a hot yoga studio, trying my absolute hardest to not throw up or pass out, and wondering how in the world my girlfriends talked me into this mess.

 

Like can’t we just veg out on the couch, watch the Real Housewives of whatever city is on TV, gossip about last night’s shenanigans, and plan our outfits for dinner tonight?

 

Wow. I was in such a different stage of my life then.

 

Little did I know how massively transformational the yoga practice would be, so much so that I would become a yoga teacher, quit my corporate career, create an online yoga community that financially supports myself and a full-time travel lifestyle, adopt a vegetarian diet, become disinterested in gossip magazines, reality TV, and buying a designer handbag, while also leading international yoga retreats and crossing entire oceans with a sailboat.

 

Like what the what. Never in my wildest dreams.

 

I was the girl who dreamed of owning a Louis Vuitton purse. I was the girl who wanted to marry rich so I didn’t have to work. I was the girl who ate hamburgers, steaks, and chicken wings (extra crispy please). I was the girl who tore other girls down at every opportunity. I was the girl who stepped on the scale every morning to gauge my worthiness.

 

I was that girl. I am still remnants of that girl.

 

But now that I am here – evolving into the woman I was born to be – I’m not the least bit surprised because this is the power of a physical yoga practice. It has a tendency to uncover deep reservoirs of courage and confidence, while also revealing and shedding layers upon layers of false beliefs and behaviors.

 

The yoga practice shows us that we can do beautifully hard things and trust ourselves through the process.

 

And the best part about the process….. there is no process.

 

You can practice any style of yoga, for however many days a week, for whatever length of time, never do one crow pose or headstand, and you will still reap the same benefits as the next yoga student.

 

This is why millions upon millions of people are turning to the yoga practice as their body-mind-soul medicine.

 

It works. It worked then, five thousand years ago. It works now in the millennium.

 

Before we dive into your new vinyasa yoga class, I want to boldly remind that you that your yoga practice is not a competition. It is not meant to create comparison. It is not here to be another to-do on your already too long to-do list.

 

It is your medicine and you get to to choose the dosage.

 

Now let’s talk about your new yoga class, because hot damn, your girl couldn’t have planned it better. Your new class is a vinyasa class that weaves the yamas and niyamas throughout the entire sequence.
