My girlfriend and I have a running joke about feeling like a slug stuck in honey.
I mean can you imagine it? A slug, an animal that already moves slow as shit, is now stuck in a glob of honey.
What now? What happens?
My friend and I use this phrase as a way to share our stuck moments, which helps us feel less alone in our daily hardships.
It’s so good. I freaking love the slug in the honey analogy.
But what does this have to do with your new solar plexus yoga class?
Well, when we examine common misalignments connected to the solar plexus, it usually involves feeling stuck. When the solar plexus is in excess, we’re driven by the ego, always doing, frustrated, angry, aggressive, and burnt out. When the solar plexus is deficient, we’re disconnected from our power, lack self-esteem, unable to direct our will, and generally passive.
In both scenarios, we feel stuck. Stuck just like a slug in honey.
When we learn how to respect this energetic center, we practice:
- consistent discipline
- take aligned action
- have mastery of will
- a sense of direction and purpose
- healthy dose of self-esteem
I share all of this because I think many of us are confused by this chakra. It’s marketed as “the power center”, the element is fire, and the activity is doing, so it’s easy to think that it’s all about pushing, trying, doing, harder, faster, hotter, sweatier.
And this mentality can work if your solar plexus is deficient, but if it’s excess (and many are), it only exacerbates the stuckness.
Again, what does this have to do with your new yoga class?
Well, here’s the thing.
If you’re someone who resonates with deficiency, then this class is a great way to ignite your power and re-establish alignment. But if you’re someone who resonates with excess, you need to discern what’s best.
Will a powerful practice cause more depletion, more anger, more frustration? Or, will it help transcend ego driven behavior and reconnect you to your true power center?
You gotta choose. I guess the point is……
I want you to have a better understanding of the chakra system, so you can choose the practices that best support your energy. Because so many of us fall into the trap of believing that we’re only worthy if our mat time is a sweaty, hot, fiery practice.
And this just isn’t true.
Everything we do – power yoga, restorative yoga, meditation, pranayama, journaling – it all matters and it’s all significant.
One day we might need this new class, a twisting and toning sequence to awaken our solar plexus. And one day, we might need a heart-centered restorative class to release self-judgement.
Both are worthy. Both are important.
So, here’s where I’ll end this.
Take a moment to check-in with yourself.
How is your energy? Where are you on the solar plexus spectrum? Deficient? Excess? Balanced?
With this awareness, now decide what to do with your time. Maybe it’s the brand new solar plexus class or maybe it’s the exact opposite.
This is the beauty of listening to our energetic system. We no longer make decisions based on a bunch of bullshit, we actually listen and follow our intuition.
So, I’ll leave you here, with a bounty of information to take the next best step.
All my love,
